An Overview of Healthcare System in India

What is healthcare?

Healthcare is the curation of services that focus on the well-being of an individual or a community and these services include hospitals, medicines, clinics, medical camps, etc. Healthcare also lies in the information, equipment, and supply of services that keep an individual healthy. It is the responsibility of a government to provide quality and affordable healthcare to its people -the most important asset of the country - and it is the basic right of every individual to gain access to basic healthcare. Citizens can only contribute towards the development of a nation if they are healthy.

Factual Data Regarding Health

1. Life expectancy: 69.66 in 2019.

2. Health risk assessment: 52.68% of men and 39.82% of women are healthy, whereas 47.32% of men and 60.18%  of women are unhealthy.

3. Healthiest city is Jaipur.

4. 613 billion rupees have been spent for public health expenditure.

5. 1.28% of public health is a share of GDP.

Problems with Healthcare

India is home to a wide variety of people. Therefore, the healthcare experience is not the same for all.

1) The urban side of India has healthcare institutions with all facilities and modern equipment, whereas it is not worth it for ruralites to go on a voyage for poor healthcare.

2) Though there are traces of healthcare development in our country, it is not uniform. Urban healthcare facilities are growing at an exponential rate whereas there are no basic sanitation facilities in rural healthcare centers.

3) Moreover, many doctors prefer to work in urban healthcare facilities where it is safe and comfortable for them to work, and not in remote areas with poorly developed hospitals and clinics.

4) Some methods of food production are harmful to humans in the long run. We can start with toxicity from pesticides sprayed on crops we finally eat, which causes illness. Artificial ingredients in processed foods increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and coronary disease.

5) Technology is another evil that is growing stronger with time. Spending a lot of time with technology, especially mobile phones and computers, overstimulates our brain and causes irritability, loss of focus, and restlessness. This uproots our peace of mind completely.

Lack of physical activity is also highly observed with technology weaved into our lives, which causes obesity and heart-related problems.

Ways to Improve Healthcare

1) The government can focus on the diet of the public and work towards making it healthier.

2) It can work towards lowering the standards of urban health centers to make them affordable.

3) It can conduct awareness programs to reach its public. Indulge healthcare into all spheres of life to remind of its importance.

4) It can work to improve sanitation of public places.

5) It can focus on promoting the importance of physical activity in our daily routines.

6) Monitor crop/food production to maintain their quality.

7) Maintain and increase forest areas for clean air.

Impact of Good Healthcare on All

Healthcare is a delicate and crucial tool with which human lives - the most important asset that cannot be recovered once damaged - can be saved. Everyone knows the impact of good healthcare, especially after 2020. Healthcare services cure and prevent diseases, increase life expectancy, allow people to reach their full potential mentally and physically. Good healthcare enforces positivity among the public and maintains peace. When a person takes good care of their health, they are in a position to work towards the development of their society.

Solution for Healthcare Problems

1) Rural health centers can be made accessible by developing their infrastructures, bringing in new equipment and providing other basic necessities, but their urban counterparts should not be left out of this conversation either.

2) Although urban health centers are praised for their quality with regards to equipment, infrastructure and other basic necessities, not everyone can afford it.

3) The government should ensure that a common man can afford healthcare. It must take steps to wipe the corruption that hides in the shadow of healthcare. Victims of Covid-19 are very well aware of how expensive healthcare is, especially in this pandemic when many people have been laid off.

4) Healthcare does not come into play when a person enters a hospital. The diet of every person is a reflection of how healthy they are, or will be in the future. Prohibit junk foods on select days. Organize awareness programs and marathons to bring people together. Conduct surveys on the quality of processed foods. There are many ways in which the government can improve the quality of healthcare.
